How do I install french twin arm wall lights?

These fixtures mount directly to a wall over an existing electrical junction box. Many period examples require professional wiring or modern rewiring to meet current safety standards. Positioning them at eye level or flanking a mirror, fireplace, or doorway ensures balanced illumination and proper visual weight in the room.

Were these originally for candles or electricity?

Most antique examples began their lives holding wax candles before being converted to electricity during later restorations. The drip pans beneath each arm originally caught melting wax. Makers designed the twin branches to project outward so that candlelight would wash across the surrounding wall space.

How do I clean gilded brass wall lights?

Dusting the metal gently with a soft, dry cloth prevents the buildup of grime without harming the delicate gilt surface. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes that strip away the gold finish. If the piece incorporates crystal drops or glass elements, remove them carefully for separate cleaning before reattaching.

How do I identify a Louis XVI style wall light?

Louis XVI style pieces feature strict symmetry, straight lines, and classical motifs derived from ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Look for ribbons, fluted columns, urns, and laurel wreaths on the backplate. This aesthetic contrasts sharply with the earlier, more fluid and asymmetrical curves of Rococo revival designs.
