What is a marble top commode used for?

The marble top provided a practical, stain resistant surface for washing apparatus, serving drinks, or displaying ornaments in a bedroom or salon. It added substantial weight to anchor the wooden carcass. These stone slabs were quarried in various regional colours, matching the decorative scheme of the room.

How do I care for antique wood and ormolu?

Maintain wood surfaces with microcrystalline wax applied sparingly, avoiding modern silicone polishes that degrade historic finishes. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer splitting. Dust ormolu mounts gently with a dry, soft brush and avoid chemical cleaners that strip the original gilding.

What is the difference between provincial and revival styles?

Provincial pieces were made for regional homes using local timbers like cherry, oak, or walnut with simpler, sturdier construction. Revival pieces, produced later in Paris and major centres, copied elite court styles with exotic veneers and elaborate bronze mounts. Regional furniture prioritised utility and local materials over courtly ornamentation.
