What is a fauteuil armchair?

A fauteuil is an upholstered French armchair featuring open wooden arms. The design prioritised relaxed posture and social interaction in period salons. Craftsmen exposed portions of the carved wooden frame, treating the structure as an integrated decorative element.

How do I identify Louis XV and Louis XVI styles?

Louis XV armchairs display curved lines, cabriole legs, and asymmetrical floral carving. The overall aesthetic is organic and flowing. Louis XVI chairs introduce neoclassical straight lines, fluted legs, and geometric shapes such as oval or square backs.

Are these armchairs comfortable for daily use?

Period armchairs were built for formal reception rooms rather than deep lounging. Their upright posture suits sitting at a desk or in a drawing room setting. Upholstery support can vary depending on whether the webbing and interior stuffing have been historically restored.

How should I care for original paint finishes?

Original painted surfaces require gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical cleaning products or abrasive materials that could lift fragile gesso and pigment layers. Keep the armchairs away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the wood and paint from drying out.
