What is an escritoire used for?

An escritoire provides a dedicated private space for writing letters and storing personal stationery. The drop-front flap opens to reveal a flat writing surface alongside small drawers and pigeonholes. When closed, the cabinet conceals the writing materials and presents a decorative veneered exterior. This dual function made them popular pieces for drawing rooms and private chambers.

How do I identify a Louis XV revival piece?

Louis XV revival pieces are characterised by serpentine outlines, cabriole legs, and asymmetrical floral marquetry. Makers of this style drew inspiration from mid-eighteenth-century French aesthetics. These designs often incorporate prominent ormolu mounts that trace the curved contours of the carcase. The overall effect emphasises flowing lines rather than strict symmetry.

What is the difference between walnut and burr walnut?

Standard walnut displays a relatively straight grain with moderate colour variation across the furniture surface. It provides a stable and traditional timber for nineteenth-century cabinet work. Burr walnut comes from growth excrescences on the tree, yielding an intricate, swirling pattern filled with small knots. This figured wood was selected for prominent veneer panels on high-quality desks.

How should I care for a veneered writing cabinet?

Keep veneered furniture away from direct sunlight and steady heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out or warping. Maintaining consistent room humidity protects the delicate marquetry inlays from lifting. Dust the surfaces gently with a dry cloth and avoid applying modern silicone polishes. Wax can be used sparingly to nourish the polished timber finish over time.
