How do I wire old wall lights?

Many vintage fixtures arrive unwired or require rewiring to meet modern electrical safety standards. A qualified electrician can thread modern internal flex through the hollow arms without disturbing the exterior metal surface. Original sconces often accommodate small candle tubes or can be adapted for low-voltage LED fittings while retaining their antique backplates and mounting brackets.

Where should wall lights be placed?

These fixtures work effectively in pairs flanking a fireplace, a large mirror, or a doorway to create balanced illumination. Positioning them at eye level ensures the light diffuses across the room without casting harsh shadows. Dining rooms, hallways, and drawing rooms benefit from the warm ambient glow provided by multiple matching arms.

How do I clean gilded bronze?

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulation in the intricate recesses of the casting. Avoid abrasive cloths, chemical solvents, or metal polishes that strip away the delicate gold layer. Water can damage underlying materials or modern electrical components, so dry dusting remains the safest maintenance method.

How do I identify a Rococo style?

Rococo designs feature asymmetrical C-scrolls, shell motifs, and flowing naturalistic foliage without rigid geometric symmetry. The overall aesthetic prioritises movement and ornate fluidity over straight lines. This style appears frequently in eighteenth century pieces and nineteenth century revival castings.
