What is the difference between ormolu and gilt brass?

Ormolu specifically denotes mercury-gilded bronze, a process that yields a deep, rich golden hue and allows for exceptionally sharp casting detail. Gilt brass uses a different base alloy and often employs alternative plating methods. While both materials present a golden finish, bronze ormolu typically feels heavier and exhibits finer chased definition under close inspection.

Can I find matching sets of four?

Matched sets of four wall lights appear regularly alongside pairs and single fixtures. These larger groupings are particularly common in nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century French designs. Acquiring a set of four ensures a uniform decorative scheme across larger reception rooms or long hallways where single pairs might look undersized.

How do I date a gilt wall sconce?

Dating relies on examining the casting style, fastening screws, and decorative motifs that align with specific periods like the Louis XV revival or Neoclassical eras. Nineteenth-century examples often feature heavier sand-cast bronze construction. Later pieces from the early twentieth century may incorporate different wiring channels and lighter brass or gilt metal stampings.
