What is a trumeau mirror?

A trumeau is a specific type of wall mirror incorporating a painted or carved panel above the glass plate. They were designed to sit flush against the wall between windows in period reception rooms. These pieces combine decorative artwork with functional reflection, offering a vertical emphasis that suits high ceilings and grand proportions.

How do I identify mercury glass?

Mercury glass mirrors display uneven reflection, dark patches, and cloudy foxing across the plate. This appearance results from the historic silvering process rather than a uniform modern coating. Such plates indicate genuine eighteenth or nineteenth-century manufacture and add mottled texture to the reflection.

Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

An overmantel mirror is traditionally scaled to rest on the mantelpiece above a fireplace. Their wide proportions help anchor the hearth visually within the room. They also function effectively as leaner mirrors placed directly on the floor against a wall to bounce light across larger spaces.

Are these frames made of solid gold?

No, these frames consist of a wooden core covered in gesso and a very thin layer of gold leaf. This technique provided the appearance of solid gold without prohibitive weight or material cost. Over the decades, the underlying red or yellow bole may show through where the gold leaf has thinned.
