What is a bouillotte table used for?

A bouillotte table functions primarily as an occasional or bedside table within a living space. The raised rim prevents items from sliding off the surface. Historically, the design accommodated card players by keeping chips and markers contained during games. Today, they serve effectively as lamp tables or decorative accent pieces.

How do I identify Louis XVI style?

Louis XVI style pieces emphasise straight lines, symmetry, and classical restraint in direct contrast to earlier curved designs. Look for fluted legs, rectangular forms, and architectural motifs. Ormolu mounts on these tables often incorporate classical ribbons, acanthus leaves, and urns. The overall silhouette remains geometric and balanced.

Are marble tops original to these tables?

Marble tops on antique French tables are typically original components integrated into the design during manufacture. Varieties like rouge and white marble were selected specifically to complement the timber frames. Inspect the seating rebate beneath the top to confirm the marble sits flush within the brass or wooden gallery. Original stones show age-appropriate wear consistent with the period of the frame.

Where should I place an ormolu mounted table?

Position these tables where adequate lighting can catch the gilded bronze and brass mounts. They perform well beside armchairs, as bedside surfaces, or as standalone display points. Keep them away from direct heat sources to protect nineteenth century timber veneers and polish. Ensure the floor is level so tables with heavy marble inserts remain stable.
