Can I place this desk in the middle of a room?

Yes, because these pieces feature finished backs designed to be viewed from any angle. They are constructed to sit away from walls without exposing unfinished timber or raw construction. This makes them practical room dividers or centrepieces for studies and libraries.

What is the difference between a bureau plat and a davenport?

A bureau plat is a table desk with drawers running along the frieze and a wide leather-inset top. It sits on four legs and offers an open profile. A davenport is a compact, box-like desk with a sloping writing lid above a pedestal of side drawers. It provides enclosed storage in a smaller footprint.

How do I care for the leather writing surface?

Keep the leather away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and drying out. Dust the surface regularly with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Applying a neutral leather cream occasionally helps maintain suppleness if the material begins to dry.

How can I tell a Victorian desk from a Georgian one?

Georgian pieces, such as those in the Chippendale style, lean towards structural restraint and solid mahogany construction with carved details. Victorian examples often introduce richer veneers like burr walnut, marquetry, and ormolu mounts. Victorian pieces also frequently show French influence through Louis XV and Louis XVI revival styles.
