How do I choose the right size?

Measure the width and depth of your hearth opening before selecting a kerb. Many period examples feature adjustable or extending frames to accommodate slight variations in floor space. Ensure the internal dimensions match your fireplace surround so the metal barrier sits squarely against the hearth floor without obstruction.

What is a club fender?

A club fender is a hearth guard fitted with cushioned leather seats on opposing ends. This nineteenth-century invention allowed people to sit directly beside the fire. These pieces combine iron or brass framing with upholstered tops in materials like mature tan leather.

How do I clean brass and copper?

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grime accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away historical patination. Preserving the aged surface texture maintains the character acquired over centuries of domestic use.

Are these kerbs adjustable?

Certain Victorian and Edwardian designs incorporate sliding mechanisms to alter the overall length. These extending frames accommodated different hearth sizes during manufacture. Check individual descriptions to determine whether a specific piece offers a fixed span or an adjustable channel.
