What defines a traditional reading chair?

A traditional reading chair combines a sturdy hardwood frame with deep textile upholstery designed for prolonged sitting. These pieces prioritise comfort through high backs, padded armrests, and supportive proportions. They appear across Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian style periods, often featuring turned or cabriole wooden legs and sometimes brass castors for ease of movement.

Where should I place an antique armchair?

An antique armchair suits studies, living rooms, and bedrooms where its proportions can be appreciated without crowding the space. Pairing a wingback or library chair with a footstool creates an inviting spot for quiet contemplation. Ensure the timber frame and fabric tones complement existing furniture while allowing enough clearance around scroll arms and cabriole legs.

How do Victorian and Edwardian chairs differ?

Victorian armchairs tend to feature heavier proportions, dark mahogany or walnut frames, and intricate details like button-backed upholstery or scroll arms. They often reflect robust construction designed for formal reception rooms. Edwardian chairs generally offer lighter silhouettes and brighter woodwork, reflecting a shift towards more relaxed country house aesthetics and comfortable domestic living.
