What is an english style buffet?

An english style buffet encompasses heavy timber sideboards, dressers, and serving tables originating from diverse periods. They serve as primary storage and display surfaces in dining spaces. These items range from rustic oak country pieces to refined rosewood Regency cabinets, each showing distinct regional carpentry traditions.

How were these sideboards used?

Historically, these cabinets stored silverware, linen, and serving dishes while the top surface held food during feasts. They functioned as both working furniture and status symbols. Today, they perform similar organizational duties in homes while displaying lamps, books, and decorative objects.

How do I identify a revival piece?

Revival items mimic earlier historic aesthetics, such as Carolean Revival or seventeenth-century style, but often date from the nineteenth or early twentieth century. They combine older decorative motifs with contemporary joinery methods. Examining the wood seasoning, interior secondary timbers, and tool marks helps determine whether a piece is period or revival.

What woods were commonly used?

Oak appears frequently in earlier and revival pieces, providing heavy and durable construction. Mahogany and rosewood dominate the later Regency and Victorian items. Pine and painted finishes also occur, particularly within English country house and provincial furniture traditions.
