How do I clean an old elm table?

Maintain the surface using a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust without stripping the natural oils from the timber. Avoid harsh modern detergents that can damage historic finishes. Wax can be applied sparingly if the wood appears dry, helping to preserve the grain and historical patina built up over generations.

Are these tables suitable for daily dining?

Many of these pieces were built precisely for heavy domestic use in kitchens, farmhouses, and workshops, making them robust for modern dining rooms. Their solid timber construction handles daily activities well. Protection from excessive moisture and heat remains sensible to preserve the antique wood surfaces and historic joinery.

How can I tell an eighteenth-century table apart from a later one?

Examine the construction marks, tool traces on the underside, and the way the planks have aged and worn over time. Eighteenth-century examples often feature hand-cut joinery and deeper patination. Later nineteenth-century and Edwardian pieces frequently show different saw marks and slight variations in hardware or framing techniques.

What is the difference between English and Chinese elm tables?

English and French versions lean towards rustic farmhouse dining boards, lowboys, and scrubbed workbenches with thick plank tops. They emphasise utilitarian strength and vernacular charm. Chinese examples encompass altar tables, console tables, and writing desks with distinct architectural framing and hardwood plank construction.
