How do I hang a heavy framed oil painting?

Heavy oil paintings require sturdy fixings screwed directly into wall studs or heavy-duty wall anchors designed for the weight of the frame and canvas. Ensure the hanging wire or D-rings on the reverse are securely fastened to the wooden stretcher bars or frame moulding before mounting.

Can I place these paintings in direct sunlight?

Direct sunlight causes oil paints to fade and can accelerate the yellowing of varnishes over time. Position your artwork away from south-facing windows to preserve the original pigments. Indirect natural light or controlled gallery lighting remains best for viewing the subtle tones of these river landscapes.

How do I clean an antique oil painting?

Dust accumulation on canvas or panels should be removed gently using a soft, dry artist's brush without pressing down on the paint surface. Avoid using water, household cleaners, or chemical solvents, as these can permanently damage the fragile oil layers and underlying gesso.

What is the difference between canvas and wood panels?

Canvas provides a flexible woven support that yields slightly to pressure, whereas wood panels offer a completely rigid surface for the paint. Wood panels were frequently utilised in nineteenth-century Flemish and Dutch works to achieve finer detail and greater structural permanence.
