What is a chinoiserie cabinet?

A chinoiserie cabinet is an item of storage furniture decorated with painted or lacquered Asian-inspired motifs. These pieces use techniques like japanning and gilding to display scenes of landscapes, figures, and pavilions.

How do I date a cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, the type of wood, and the formulation of the lacquer or paint. Stylistic cues such as Edwardian revival details or early twentieth-century proportions also help determine age.

Where were these cabinets made?

Origin points include both British workshops producing japanned furniture and Chinese workshops crafting traditional storage pieces. Makers across Europe adapted these aesthetic traditions throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

How do I care for lacquer?

Lacquer surfaces require protection from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking. Dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth preserves the polished finish without harming the painted details.
