Where were crystal glass lustres placed?

These decorative objects sat primarily on mantelpieces above fireplaces or upon dining tables. Their reflective pendants brightened dimly lit nineteenth-century rooms by multiplying the flicker of candles. Pairs remained the standard arrangement to balance mantel displays or furniture surfaces. They served both as functional candleholders and as decorative centrepieces.

How do I identify a Victorian lustre?

Victorian examples frequently utilise rich coloured glass such as ruby, green, or yellow alongside clear cut crystal. They often date from the nineteenth century and appear as matched pairs. Heavier brass or gilt metal bases commonly anchor these pieces. The cut glass drops hang securely from wire loops around the upper rim.

Flash glass consists of a clear or contrasting glass body covered by a thin skin of coloured glass. Makers cut patterns through the outer layer to reveal the different colour underneath. This technique created striking visual contrast on ruby and Bohemian overlay pieces. It allowed artisans to combine deep colour with sparkling cut facets.

Can I use real candles in them?

Most antique lustres were built to hold standard taper candles securely within their metal or glass sockets. Using modern candles requires checking that the base fits the nozzle width. Caution is necessary around the hanging crystal drops, which can detach or chip if bumped. Placing them away from drafts protects the glass pendants.
