How do I choose the right size chandelier?

Consider the dimensions of your room and the height of your ceiling when selecting a fixture. Smaller spaces suit compact spike or mini chandeliers, while larger rooms accommodate multi-tier or multi-arm designs. Ensure adequate clearance below the lowest hanging crystal drops for safe passage underneath. Proportion remains key to balancing the visual weight of the metal and glass against the surrounding furniture.

How do I date a crystal chandelier?

Examine the construction methods, metal types and cutting styles of the glass components to establish a period of origin. Nineteenth-century examples often feature heavy gilded bronze frames, while nineteen-twenties pieces introduce diverse decorative flourishes like porcelain flowers or spelter figures. Wiring methods and hardware can also indicate the age of a fixture, though many have been re-wired for modern use. Comparing the silhouette against known Edwardian or French styles helps narrow down the manufacturing era.

How do I clean a crystal chandelier?

Remove dust regularly using a soft brush or specialised long-handled duster designed for delicate glass components. For a deeper clean, apply a mixture of warm water and mild isopropyl alcohol directly onto the crystal drops using a cloth. Support each pendant with your hand from underneath while wiping to prevent strain on the wire frames. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might damage the gilt metal surfaces or strip the finish from the bronze and brass.
