How do I date cream wooden drawers?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber types, and hardware fixings within the piece. Secondary woods and dovetail joints often provide clear clues to the manufacturing era. Surface finishes also help establish age, though subsequent repainting is common on older utility furniture. Comparing the hardware style against known period designs refines the dating further.

Are painted finishes usually original?

Many older storage pieces have received later coats of paint to suit changing interior decoration trends over the decades. Original decorative surfaces are less common and usually command greater interest from collectors. Inspecting the paint layers under natural light reveals wear patterns and underlying preparation that indicate age. Craquelure and fading often point to historical paint application rather than modern work.

How do I care for painted wooden furniture?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent abrasive particles from scratching the painted surface. Avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture preserves both the timber and the finish. Wax or mild cleaning products should be used sparingly, ensuring they suit painted rather than raw wood surfaces. Proper climate control prevents the timber beneath from expanding and cracking the paint.

What is the difference between commodes and chests?

Commodes generally refer to decorative French or continental low chests of drawers with sophisticated shaping and finishes. They frequently feature serpentine or bombé profiles designed for formal reception rooms. Standard chests of drawers often follow simpler architectural lines intended for domestic bedroom storage. Regional English and country pieces tend to prioritize utilitarian capacity over ornate shaping.
