What defines continental furniture?

Continental furniture designates pieces made in mainland Europe rather than Great Britain. It spans diverse regional aesthetics, from Italian painted commodes to Biedermeier walnut cabinets. These items reflect the distinct craft traditions and domestic habits of specific European countries across several centuries.

How do I identify a Biedermeier piece?

Biedermeier pieces typically feature blonde or figured veneers like birch and walnut with minimal carved ornamentation. The emphasis rests on clean architectural lines and natural wood grains. Such furniture dates primarily from the 19th century and prioritises functional elegance over ostentatious display.

Where were painted commodes made?

Painted commodes originate frequently from Italian workshops, where artisans applied decorative pigments directly to wood surfaces. These pieces often incorporate floral motifs or faux-marble finishes. Regional centres developed distinct colour palettes and ornamentation styles that separate them from northern European equivalents.

How are marquetry tables decorated?

Marquetry tables utilise precision-cut wood veneers fitted together to form pictorial or geometric designs. Craftsmen selected contrasting timbers to create depth and shade within the pattern. This meticulous technique appears prominently on Dutch and continental tables from the 18th century onward.
