What is a snuff mull?

A snuff mull is a traditional container fashioned from animal horn, particularly associated with Scottish makers and users. These pieces utilise the natural curve and texture of the horn to create robust receptacles. Fitted silver mounts and hinged lids often complete the construction, sometimes incorporating decorative stones or integrated spoons.

How were silver vinaigrettes used?

Silver vinaigrettes held a small sponge soaked in scented vinegar or aromatic compounds to counteract unpleasant odours in public spaces. The internal pierced grille allowed the scent to escape while keeping the wet sponge sequestered. These pieces function similarly to snuff containers in size and pocket portability, though their purpose is strictly aromatic.

How do I date an antique snuff box?

Dating relies upon a combination of material fashion, construction methods, and official hallmarks stamped into the metal components. Silver items often carry assay office marks and date letters that pinpoint the exact year of manufacture. Organic materials like papier-mâché and turned wood require stylistic analysis of the decorative motifs and manufacturing patents to establish an approximate period.

Can I still carry snuff in these containers?

Many antique boxes retain tight closures and sound hinges suitable for holding dry tobacco powder during occasional use. However, fragile materials like tortoiseshell and antique papier-mâché benefit from gentle handling to preserve their historic surfaces. Collectors generally treat these vessels as display pieces rather than everyday accessories.
