What periods do these pieces represent?

The inventory spans the eighteenth century through to the 1930s, concentrating heavily on nineteenth-century production. Items cross several design revivals including Empire and Rococo. Specific dates on individual listings point to distinct stylistic movements, such as art deco items from the 1920s and 1930s alongside earlier Victorian works.

How do I identify a bureau plat?

A bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table designed to stand away from the wall in a room. They feature finished backs and drawers built into the frieze. These desks frequently display leather writing surfaces surrounded by ormolu edge banding and cabriole or tapered legs.

What is toleware used in lamps?

Toleware refers to painted or lacquered sheet metal utilised for lamp shades and bodies. It provides a durable surface often finished in deep green or dark tones. In bouillotte lamps, the adjustable tole shade directs light downward onto the playing surface or desk below.

How do I care for gilt bronze?

Gilt bronze surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent the accumulation of grit in recessed details. Avoid commercial cleaning liquids which can strip the gilding. Handling pieces by the metal rather than attached porcelain or glass prevents stress on historic joints and fixings.
