What is a hongmu table?

A hongmu table is a piece of antique Chinese furniture made from dense tropical hardwoods like rosewood and padouk. These tables range from low coffee surfaces to tall plant stands. They reflect the traditional woodworking methods of the Qing Dynasty, relying on solid timber construction and carved details rather than veneers.

How do I use a plant stand?

Tall plant stands and urn supports serve as vertical display pedestals in corners or beside seating. Their inset marble panels provide a cool, flat surface. Beyond holding plants, they work well for lamps, sculptures, or decorative ceramics where floor space is limited.

What is a nest of tables?

A nest of tables consists of a graded set of four smaller surfaces that slide neatly beneath one another. This design saves floor space while offering extra tabletop capacity when entertaining. Nineteenth-century examples in this group feature solid hardwood frames and occasionally inlaid burr wood tops.

How do I care for rosewood?

Keep these heavy tropical hardwoods away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity shifts to prevent timber movement. Dust them gently with a dry cloth. Avoid heavy liquid polishes, as the dense grain of hongmu requires little maintenance to retain its natural sheen.
