What is a chesterfield fireside chair?

A chesterfield fireside chair is a traditional upholstered armchair, typically featuring deep buttoning and wings, designed for warmth and comfort by a hearth. These pieces combine sturdy timber frames with leather upholstery, originating across various periods from the georgian era through the twentieth century.

How do I date an antique armchair?

Dating relies on observing structural characteristics, timber choices, and upholstery styles associated with periods like the victorian, edwardian, or eighteenth century. Changes in leg shape, frame construction methods, and leather treatments offer reliable clues to a piece's chronological origin.

Where should I place one?

These armchairs suit studies, libraries, and living rooms, functioning naturally beside a fireplace or as standalone reading seats. Their substantial scale and rich leather finishes allow them to anchor traditional and eclectic interior schemes alike.

What maintenance does leather need?

Leather upholstery benefits from regular dusting and occasional conditioning to keep the hide supple and preserve its natural patination. Avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat prevents the leather from drying out or cracking over time.
