Where should I place a lamp table?

These tables suit placement beside low seating, reading chairs, or beds where surface space is required for illumination. Their compact footprints allow them to fit into corners or between larger pieces of furniture without crowding a room. Because many examples feature finished backs and decorative marquetry tops, they also function well as freestanding pieces in the centre of a room or positioned against a hallway wall.

How do I identify a serpentine front?

A serpentine front curves outward in the middle and curves inward toward the corners, creating an undulating 'S' shape when viewed from above. This profile demands careful shaping of the solid timber framework and the applied veneer edge. Poorer examples may feature a rigid or heavy curve that lacks the fluid transition seen in better nineteenth-century pieces.

What is the difference between an occasional table and a lamp table?

Occasional tables encompass a broad category of small, movable furniture designed for varied domestic tasks. A lamp table is a specific subset intended primarily to hold a lighting fixture. In practice, many nineteenth-century designs served multiple functions, acting interchangeably as lamp stands, side tables, or writing surfaces depending on the room.

How do I care for burr walnut veneer?

Burr walnut veneer benefits from consistent indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight, which can fade the warm tones of the timber. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth maintains the polished surface without moisture damage. Avoid placing damp items directly onto the wood, and use coasters beneath lamps or glassware to protect the antique polish.
