How do I wire an old marble lamp?

Rewiring requires running modern flexible cable through the existing central channel of the stone or metal stem. A qualified electrician should handle the internal replacement to ensure safety with period components. Original brass socket holders can often be retained while updating the internal wiring and plug to meet current standards. Care must be taken not to damage the stone when tightening internal threaded rods.

What styles are common in stone lighting?

Neoclassical and Art Deco styles appear frequently among carved stone fixtures. These incorporate classical motifs like acanthus leaves, columns, and dolphin figures into the design. Victorian and Edwardian versions lean towards heavier proportions and ornate ormolu mounts. Italian workshops often produced alabaster and onyx pieces with distinct regional carving characteristics.

How do I clean carved alabaster?

Dust alabaster gently with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent dirt settling into the porous surface. Avoid using water or liquid cleaners, as moisture can stain or dissolve the stone. Stubborn surface marks require professional attention from a stone conservator. Harsh chemical solvents will permanently damage the polished finish of the material.

Are these lamps heavy to place?

Solid marble and onyx structures create significant weight at the base of each lamp. This mass provides stability for taller standard lamps and large table models. Placement requires sturdy furniture surfaces capable of supporting concentrated stone weight. Floor lamps benefit from wide footprints that distribute the heavy load safely across the floor.
