What is a campaign folding stand?

A campaign folding stand is a portable piece of furniture featuring a collapsible base designed to support a tray, top, or basin for travel and flexible home use. These items originated to serve officers and travellers who needed functional surfaces that could be packed away quickly.

How were these stands used originally?

They served primarily for serving meals, holding washing equipment, or providing temporary desk space in tents, ships, and temporary quarters. The folding design allowed the entire assembly to be dismantled and stowed in luggage during transit.

How do I date an antique folding stand?

Dating relies on timber selection, such as Cuban mahogany or satinwood in Georgian pieces, alongside the style of brass hardware and joinery. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples often incorporate machine-made screws and alternative woods like walnut or oak.

Are folding stands stable enough for daily use?

Original campaign stands use robust X-frame mechanisms and quality hardwoods designed to support significant weight without wobbling. Properly maintained hinges and tight joints ensure these pieces remain fully functional for modern serving or display.
