What is a press cupboard used for?

A press cupboard was traditionally designed for storing household linens, sheets, and folded garments on internal sliding trays. The lower drawer section provided supplementary storage for smaller items of clothing and textiles.

How do I date a brown wood press cupboard?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, construction methods, cornice styles, and decorative details such as inlay or bracket feet. Earlier pieces often display solid oak or figured mahogany with hand-cut dovetails, while later 19th-century examples introduce machine-prepared elements and burr walnut veneers.

Are press cupboards modular?

Many older press cupboards are built in two distinct sections, separating the upper cabinet from the lower drawer base for transport. This two-part construction was essential for moving heavy timber furniture up narrow staircases in historic homes.

How do I care for antique wood furniture?

Maintain the timber by keeping the cupboard away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity that can dry out old wood. Apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the surface and preserve the natural lustre of the grain.
