How do I identify a Regency sofa?

Regency sofas typically display classical influences, drawing inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian forms. Look for simulated rosewood finishes, bold carved frames, and classical motifs. These pieces usually date from the early nineteenth century and possess a distinct architectural presence compared to later Victorian designs.

What is a salon sofa?

A salon sofa is a lighter, more decorative seating piece designed for formal reception rooms rather than heavy daily use. They often feature exposed wooden frames with spindle backs or delicate carvings. Because they were meant for entertaining spaces, makers prioritised elegance and style over deep lounging comfort.

Are these couches suitable for everyday use?

Many antique wooden couches can handle regular use, provided their internal webbing and upholstery have been properly restored. Leather and sturdy fabric coverings offer practical durability for modern living. It helps to consider whether a piece was built as a heavy country house sofa or a lighter drawing room settee before deciding its placement.

How do I care for antique wood and leather?

Maintain wooden frames by keeping them away from direct heat sources and applying appropriate wax polish sparingly. Leather surfaces benefit from specialised conditioning to prevent drying and cracking over time. Gentle dusting with a soft cloth preserves the finish and patina developed over the centuries.
