How do I clean brown veneer drawers?

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt buildup on the delicate timber grain. Avoid modern chemical polishes that can degrade historical finishes. Apply a traditional beeswax occasionally to nourish the wood and maintain a gentle sheen. Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the veneer from lifting.

How do I date a walnut chest?

Examine the construction methods, drawer linings, and overall proportions to determine the likely period of manufacture. Early 18th-century pieces often feature feather-banding and hand-cut dovetails distinct from later Victorian manufacturing. Hardware placement and keyhole escutcheon styles also provide clear clues regarding age. Comparing the foot style, such as bracket feet or cabriole legs on stands, helps narrow down the decade.

Where should I place a chest on stand?

Position a chest on stand against a solid wall in a bedroom, hallway, or living space where its vertical proportions can be appreciated. Because these pieces are elevated on legs, they occupy less visual floor space than standard box chests. Ensure the room maintains stable humidity levels to protect the delicate veneers and joinery. Avoid damp corners or spots subject to dramatic temperature swings.
