How do I identify a smoker's bow?

Smoker's bows are low, heavy wooden armchairs featuring a rounded arm rail supported by turned spindles above a saddle seat. They were widely used in domestic parlours and commercial settings. Most examples date from the Victorian era and combine beech or ash frames with solid elm seats.

Where were these chairs made?

Many of these pieces originate from English country workshops, with regional variations emerging from counties like Nottinghamshire. Makers utilised local hardwoods available to their provincial yards. This regional approach resulted in distinct turning patterns and timber combinations unique to specific maker traditions.

How do I care for antique wood chairs?

Maintain antique wooden frames by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive dry heat, which can cause timber to split. Apply appropriate beeswax periodically to nourish the historic surface. Keep upholstered elements clean with gentle brushing, preserving the original fabric integrity where possible.
