What is a brown chaise longue?

A brown chaise longue is a nineteenth-century daybed or couch designed for reclining, typically featuring a timber frame and upholstered surfaces in leather or fabric. These pieces combine the seating function of an armchair with the full-length relaxation of a bed, intended for parlours, libraries, and drawing rooms.

How do I date a chaise longue?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers such as Regency scroll ends, early Victorian rosewood carving, or late Victorian walnut frames. Construction methods and timber choices also help place pieces within specific nineteenth-century decades.

Where were they used?

These pieces traditionally furnished principal reception rooms, libraries, and private retiring chambers of nineteenth-century homes. They provided a comfortable spot for daytime resting without requiring occupants to retire to a bedroom.

How do I style a chaise longue?

A chaise longue works well as a focal point in a living room, study, or bedroom, positioned to take advantage of natural light. Pair it with complementary period furniture or let it stand alone as a statement seating piece.
