What is a brown blanket chest used for?

These chests served historically for storing blankets, textiles, and household valuables securely away from damp conditions. Today, they function similarly in modern homes as practical storage furniture placed at the foot of a bed or within a living space. Beyond simple storage, their flat tops allow them to double as occasional benches or coffee tables. Their rich timber surfaces also bring warmth and historical texture to contemporary interiors.

How do I date an old oak chest?

Dating relies on observing construction techniques, tool marks, and hardware types used in the assembly. Seventeenth-century pieces typically display hand-riven oak panels, pegged joints, and wrought iron strap hinges. Later chests introduce machine-sawn timber, dovetail joints, and brass fixtures. Comparing the style of mouldings and feet against established period examples helps narrow the decade of manufacture.

What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a specialised trunk designed for officers on military campaigns during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They were built in modular sections with recessed brass handles to facilitate transport on pack animals or ships. These pieces frequently utilise exotic woods like camphor or mahogany to withstand tropical climates. Brass banding and corner brackets provided extra durability for rough travel conditions.

Are camphor wood chests safe for linen?

Camphor wood chests are traditionally prized for storing woollens and linens because the aromatic wood repels moths and insects naturally. The dense timber also protects contents from moisture in humid environments. While the strong scent transfers to fabrics stored within, it generally dissipates shortly after items are removed and aired. This practical property made them popular for maritime travel and colonial homes.
