What pieces count as brown bedroom furniture?

The category encompasses wooden items designed for sleeping quarters, primarily chests of drawers, wardrobes, dressing tables, beds, and bedside cupboards. These pieces originate from various eras, including Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco periods, utilising timbers such as mahogany, oak, and walnut.

How do I identify a Georgian chest of drawers?

Georgian chests typically feature solid mahogany or oak construction with hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes. They often present proportioned drawer arrangements like two short drawers over three long ones. Design cues include brass drop handles or bail handles, bracket feet or ogee feet, and clean, classical lines without heavy ornamentation.

What is a Wellington chest?

A Wellington chest is a tall, slender set of drawers distinguished by a locking stile, which is a vertical wooden flap hinged to one side. When locked with a key, this flap secures every drawer in the stack. Originating in the Victorian era, this form maximised storage capacity while occupying minimal floor space in the bedroom.

How do I care for antique wooden furniture?

Keep wooden pieces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber and veneer from drying out or splitting. Maintaining stable room humidity preserves the condition of the wood. Apply traditional wax polish occasionally to nourish the surface and clean gently with a soft, dry cloth rather than modern chemical sprays.
