Brass Topped Side Table
A brass topped side table brings a bright, metallic surface and dark timber or stone together for a practical living space addition.
Brass Topped Side Table
A brass topped side table appears in forms ranging from compact occasional and lamp tables to circular bouillotte and Gueridon tables. These pieces span the nineteenth century, the Edwardian era, and the nineteen-twenties, incorporating styles such as Regency, French Empire, and Louis XVI.
Makers and makers' manners like James Shoolbred, Maison Millet, François Linke, and Mallett of London appear alongside Anglo-Indian tray top designs. Buyers find side tables, console tables, tea tables, card tables, and bedside cabinets sharing similar metallic top details.
Evaluating Construction
The precision of the brass inlay and the crispness of the cast ormolu mounts separate standard items from finer workshop pieces. Solid timber frames with well-fitted marble or glass tops indicate higher workshop standards.
The weight of the brass components and the stability of pedestal or tripod bases reflect the original design integrity and the grade of materials selected by the maker.
Listings feature brass, mahogany, marble, rosewood, walnut, leather, glass, and ormolu across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Brass Topped Side Table: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I identify a French Empire table?
French Empire tables typically display classical bronze or ormolu mounts, dark mahogany timbers, and strict symmetrical lines. They often include marble tops.
These pieces reflect early nineteenth-century design tastes influenced by classical antiquity and military motifs.
Where should I place an occasional table?
An occasional table suits living rooms beside a sofa, or hallways where surface space is limited. Two-tier and tray top variants provide extra storage.
Their compact footprints allow them to fit easily into smaller interior spaces without crowding the room.
What is the difference between a gueridon and a bouillotte table?
A gueridon is a small stand or table often supported by a central column or figures with a round top. A bouillotte table specifically includes a raised gallery edge around the marble top.
Both forms utilise brass mounts and marble surfaces but serve slightly different traditional functions in French interiors.
