What is a brass and glass candle holder?

A brass and glass candle holder is a lighting accessory combining a metal frame with glass components like drops, shades, or chimneys. They range from simple candlesticks to multi-armed candelabra. These objects utilise the reflective properties of both polished brass and cut glass to maximise the brilliance of candlelight in a room.

How do I date a candle holder?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers, manufacturing techniques, and material combinations recorded across different periods. Victorian pieces often show heavy brass framing and distinct cut crystal detailing. Earlier eighteenth-century or Regency examples display different casting styles and lustre drop shapes compared to later Edwardian or nineteen-thirty designs.

Were these holders used for daily lighting?

Many of these pieces served as functional lighting on dining tables, desks, and mantelpieces before widespread electricity. Candlesticks with chimneys and storm shades were specifically designed to protect flames from breezes. More decorative table lustres and girandole mirrors also functioned to brighten dark evening rooms by multiplying the available flame light.

How should I clean glass drops?

Cleaning glass components requires gentle washing with warm soapy water and careful drying to avoid disturbing any metal mounts. Detachable glass drops should be removed individually for safe handling. Harsh abrasives must be avoided on both the glass and the underlying brass or gilt surfaces to preserve the original finish.

A Cricklite is a specific patented candle lamp system featuring cut glass and brass components. These nineteenth-century pieces utilised specialised night lights and shades. They represent a distinct type of decorative lighting produced during the Victorian period by specific makers.
