How were boxed coffee spoon sets used?

These sets were brought out after formal dinners to accompany small cups of black coffee. Guests used the diminutive spoons to stir sugar into their cups. The fitted box kept the delicate spoons clean and protected between formal gatherings, preventing the silver from knocking together in a drawer.

How do I clean silver spoons safely?

Wash the spoons gently in warm, soapy water using a soft cloth rather than abrasive pads. Dry them thoroughly with a microfiber towel to prevent water spots. Avoid submerging pieces that feature enamel or delicate stone settings in liquid cleaner, as harsh chemicals can damage the non-metal elements.

Can I use these spoons daily?

Sterling silver handles regular use well, provided the spoons are washed by hand rather than placed in an automatic dishwasher. Enamelled pieces require more care to avoid chipping the glass surface. Storing the spoons back in their fitted velvet or satin slots prevents scratching from other cutlery in the kitchen.

How do I date an antique set?

Check the reverse of the spoon handles for hallmarks, which typically include a date letter indicating the exact year of assay. Comparing the box style and typography also helps narrow down the decade. Art Deco geometric motifs point toward the 1920s and 1930s, while more flowing, organic lines suggest earlier Edwardian or Art Nouveau production.
