What is a bombe commode cabinet?

A bombe commode cabinet is a decorative storage chest featuring convex, swelling sides and front profiles derived from eighteenth-century French design. These pieces function primarily as statement storage units, appearing in variations from grand sideboards to small bedside cabinets.

How do I date a bombe commode cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the underlying construction timbers, the style of the ormolu mounts, and the nature of the veneer work. Eighteenth-century originals differ in timber preparation and joinery from nineteenth-century revival pieces. Stylistic shifts between Louis XV, Régence, and later revival periods provide further chronological markers for each cabinet.

Where should I place a bombe commode cabinet?

These cabinets work best as focal points in hallways, principal reception rooms, or spacious bedrooms where their curved profiles can be appreciated from multiple angles. The marble tops provide a sturdy surface for lamps or decorative objects, while the deep drawers offer functional storage.

How do I care for marble and ormolu?

Marble tops require simple cleaning with mild, non-acidic soap and water to prevent staining from liquids or cosmetics. Avoid abrasive cleaners that dull the polished stone surface. Ormolu mounts should be dusted gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding metal polishes that strip the original gilding.
