How should I hang maritime art at home?

Maritime paintings suit rooms with neutral walls where the blue tones of sea and sky can stand out. Ensure works on paper, such as watercolours, avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading. Pair framed watercolours and oil canvases with simple hardware that complements the traditional wooden frames.

What subjects appear in these coastal scenes?

Common subjects include sailing ships, warships, fishing boats, and merchant vessels navigating coastal waters. Harbours from Cornwall to Venice provide backdrops for daily maritime activity. Scenes also capture storms at sea, calm anchorages, and coastal landscapes featuring local figures.

How do I identify a watercolour from an oil painting?

Watercolours are painted on paper, often displayed under glass with a matte border. They exhibit translucent layers where the white of the paper shows through the pigment. Oil paintings utilise canvas or wooden panels as supports, featuring textured brushstrokes and opaque layers of paint.
