Where should I place a jar lamp?

These lamps suit sideboards, console tables, and living room reading corners where their height and decorative patterns can be appreciated. Pairs work well balanced on matching side tables or flanking a fireplace. Keep them away from direct sunlight to protect silk and fabric shades while allowing the ceramic glaze to catch ambient room light.

Are the shades original to the lamps?

The fabric and silk shades found on these lamps are generally later replacements added during the conversion process or updated by recent owners. Antique ceramic jars were originally utilitarian vessels or decorative vases, not lighting. Lighting specialists fit shades to suit the proportions of the jar and the electrical safety standards of modern homes.

How do I care for antique ceramic lamps?

Dust the porcelain body regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grime from settling into the glaze or crackleware lines. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or submerging the lamp in water. Check the electrical wiring periodically or consult a qualified electrician to ensure the vintage fittings remain safe for daily use.
