Where should an overmantel mirror be hung?

An overmantel mirror traditionally sits centrally on the chimney breast directly above the fireplace mantel. This placement reflects light from windows and balances the vertical volume of the hearth. Alternatively, these large frames work well mounted on any principal wall in a reception room to create a strong focal point and add depth to the space.

What is mercury glass?

Mercury glass refers to mirror plates produced using a double-walled glass technique or silvered with a mercury amalgam in the nineteenth century. This older method creates a characteristic mottled appearance as the backing ages. Many period mirrors retain this original glass, which shows soft foxing marks rather than the uniform reflection of modern plate glass.

How do I identify a Louis Philippe mirror?

Louis Philippe mirrors typically feature a rectangular format with rounded top corners and a subtle, unpretentious moulded frame. They often include modest crestings or clean sight lines without excessive carving. Originating in nineteenth-century France, this style balances decorative appeal with a restrained architectural presence.

Can these heavy mirrors be wall mounted safely?

These large framed mirrors require substantial fixings secured directly into wall studs or masonry to support their considerable weight safely. Professional installation is recommended due to the heavy wooden frames and thick glass plates. The weight varies depending on whether the core structure uses dense oak or lighter gesso over pine.
