What were apothecary drawer boxes used for?

These boxes served as secure storage for medicinal ingredients, powders, and medical apparatus used by doctors and apothecaries. Domestic versions also functioned as spice cabinets or specialised containers for holding small valuable items and watch parts.

How do I date an antique cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods like dovetailing, and the style of the brass hardware. Georgian and Regency pieces tend to feature formal mahogany designs, while later Victorian and Edwardian examples show diverse regional utility styles.

Are original glass bottles usually included?

Some travelling cases and medical chests retain their original fitted glass bottles and stoppers within internal compartments. Many other cabinets have lost their glassware over time and survive as empty drawer units adapted for modern storage.

Can I hang these cabinets on a wall?

Certain spice boxes and small chests are explicitly constructed for wall mounting in kitchens or workrooms. Tabletop cabinets and larger collector chests are designed to rest securely on flat surfaces rather than hang.
