What is the difference between a settee and a couch?

A settee generally refers to a light, upholstered bench with a back and arms, designed for multiple sitters. The term couch often encompasses a broader range of reclining furniture, including daybeds and chaise longues. Historical terminology varied by region and maker, leading to interchangeable descriptions in period inventories. Today, the physical form of the backrest and ends guides the classification.

Are these couches suitable for daily use?

Period wooden couches require thoughtful placement and gentle use to preserve their structural integrity and antique upholstery. Heavy daily wear can stress centuries-old joints and delicate show wood frames. Many collectors use them as statement pieces in low-traffic rooms or pair them with supportive modern cushions to protect the antique webbing and internal stuffing.

How should I care for antique wood and fabric?

Maintain the timber surfaces by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying a specialist beeswax to nourish the old polish. Keep furniture away from direct sunlight and severe temperature fluctuations to prevent the wood from splitting. Upholstery benefits from careful vacuuming using a low-suction attachment with a brush guard. Professional textile conservationists should handle deeper cleaning for delicate antique fabrics.
