How do I clean antique walnut furniture?

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid modern silicone sprays, opting instead for traditional beeswax applied sparingly to nourish the timber. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the walnut veneer from drying and lifting. Proper environmental control preserves the original polish and grain depth.

What periods do these pieces date from?

The listings span from the mid-nineteenth century through the Edwardian era and into the nineteen-thirties. Victorian pieces often showcase heavy burr walnut and ornate carving. Later art deco examples introduce streamlined shapes, straight-grained walnut, and contrasting birds-eye maple. Each period brings distinct design signatures to the doors and cabinets.

Are these doors sold as architectural salvage?

Most items listed are complete cabinets, wardrobes, and bookcases rather than detached architectural doors. They function as freestanding furniture pieces with fully integrated door assemblies. Some items feature specific panel sets or wall cabinets designed for fixed room placement. The primary focus remains on complete furniture forms featuring prominent wooden doors.

How do I identify burr walnut?

Burr walnut is characterised by small, swirling knots and circular patterns across the grain. It creates a highly decorative, mottled appearance unlike straight-grained timber. Craftsmenship is evident where these swirling patterns are mirrored symmetrically across double doors. This technique requires exceptional skill in veneer preparation and application.
