Where should I hang an antique trumeau panel?

These panels work effectively when mounted centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece or positioned on a blank wall between windows to reflect natural light. Because of their vertical proportions, they help to draw the eye upward and enhance the apparent height of a room.

How do I clean the mirror and painted panel?

Dust the gilded frame and painted upper section gently with a soft, dry brush to avoid disturbing historic finishes. Use a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than the glass directly when tending to the mirror plate.

Are the oil paintings on these panels original?

Many panels retain their original eighteenth or nineteenth-century oil paintings on canvas or wood, depicting pastoral or classical scenes. Closer inspection under good light often reveals the craquelure and pigment maturity expected of genuine period artwork.

What is the difference between a trumeau and an overmantel?

A trumeau specifically pairs a mirror with a distinct decorative painting or relief panel above it within a unified architectural frame. While many trumeaus function as overmantels, standard overmantel mirrors may consist solely of framing and glass without the upper decorative artwork.

How do I identify a French Empire trumeau?

French Empire pieces frequently incorporate classical architectural elements such as columns, pilasters, and motifs related to military or mythological triumphs. These panels often date from the early nineteenth century and display formal symmetry and bold decorative relief work.
