How do I identify a Windsor chair?

Windsor chairs are defined by their heavy solid wooden seats, which serve as the central anchor for both the legs below and the spindles above. Unlike framed upholstered chairs, the structural members are tenoned directly into bored holes in the seat slab. Regional variations such as hoop backs, comb backs, and stick backs help determine where a chair was made. Examining the wood species, typically elm or ash, often reveals the domestic British origins of these pieces.

Where were these armchairs used?

These armchairs served diverse domestic functions, from fireside seating in country cottages to formal reception rooms in townhouses. Heavier armchairs and rocking chairs populated parlours and libraries for daily reading and relaxation. Export and colonial pieces fulfilled administrative and domestic roles in British overseas residences before returning to the European market. Lighter bedroom chairs and hall chairs occupied upper floors and entrance spaces.

How do I care for antique timber?

Maintaining antique timber requires stable indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight and heat sources. Sudden environmental changes cause wood to dry out, split, or warp over time. Occasional applications of traditional beeswax nourish the grain and preserve the historic surface sheen without sealing the wood beneath modern synthetics.

What is the difference between ash and elm?

Ash offers high elasticity and strength, making it ideal for steam-bent components like hoops and bows. Its fibrous grain handles tension well without snapping during the bending process. Elm provides exceptional interlocking grain that resists splitting, which explains its widespread selection for solid carved chair seats. Makers combined these timbers to exploit the specific mechanical properties of each wood.
