What pieces belong in a complete set?

A standard set traditionally includes a poker for adjusting fuel, a pair of tongs for handling logs or coals, and a shovel for clearing ash. Many configurations also include a supporting stand, frame or matched fender to hold the implements upright by the hearth.

How do I distinguish Georgian from Victorian sets?

Georgian and Regency sets often display restrained classical lines with urn finials and tapered shafts, frequently incorporating gilt brass highlights. Victorian sets tend towards heavier proportions, sometimes featuring more elaborate ornamentation or robust Arts and Crafts construction methods.

Can these tools still be used?

Most antique steel implements remain structurally robust enough for regular fireside duties, provided the metal shows no deep corrosion. Owners should clean and oil polished steel surfaces periodically to prevent rust formation in damp environments.

Why do some sets combine steel and brass?

The pairing of steel shafts with brass handles and finials offered a decorative contrast popular across multiple interior design periods. Brass provided a warm visual accent against the cold, dark grey of polished or burnished steel.
