What is a spirit case?

A spirit case is a portable wooden box, leather pouch, or fitted carrier designed to hold glass bottles, flasks, and drinking vessels securely during travel or for domestic display. These pieces protect fragile glassware and silver while keeping beverages organised for immediate use in the dining room, on a journey, or in a military camp.

How do I date a decanter box?

Dating relies on timber choices, construction techniques, lock types, and overall style characteristics such as Regency brass inlay or Victorian oak marquetry. Hardware details, including maker marks on silver mounts or patent stamps on locks, provide specific chronological markers for the piece.

Were these cases used outdoors?

Many examples, such as saddle flasks and campaign spirit sets, were built specifically for outdoor pursuits, hunting, mountaineering, and military service. Robust leather cases and heavy glass bottles ensured the contents survived rough handling in the field.

What is the difference between a tantalus and a decanter box?

A decanter box encloses bottles entirely within a lidded wooden case, whereas a tantalus locks the decanter necks in place while leaving the crystal bodies visible. A tantalus secures the contents against unauthorized pouring without hiding the cut glass from view.
