What fits inside an antique smoking case?

Pocket cases typically hold hand-rolled cigarettes, slim cigars, or wooden vestas. Larger tabletop boxes and cabinets accommodate multiple cigar tubes, pipes, tobacco pouches, and matches. Interior straps and silk linings keep the contents secure during travel or storage on a desk.

How do I date a silver smoking case?

British silver cases carry hallmarks that include a date letter, a town mark, and a standard mark indicating sterling purity. These stamps allow you to trace the exact year of manufacture and the assay office. Continental pieces often display standard purity numbers like 900 alongside maker stamps.

What is the difference between a cigar case and a cigarette case?

Cigar and cheroot cases are generally narrower and deeper, often formed with a rigid curved shape or covered in crocodile leather to protect unlit tobacco from crushing. Cigarette cases are flatter and wider, designed with internal spring arms to hold loose cigarettes in place. Some luxury examples combine compartments for both items alongside match holders.

How should I clean a silver smoking case?

Use a soft cloth to remove dust and handle silver with care to preserve engraved details and gilding. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip away the natural patination built up over decades of use. Leather and wood components require separate maintenance using appropriate conditioning balms rather than metal polish.
