How do I identify a Georgian silver vinaigrette?

Georgian vinaigrettes are typically small pocket boxes featuring a hinged lid that opens to reveal a pierced internal metal grille. This inner plate lifts out to allow placement of a scented sponge. Assay office marks and maker stamps on the inner rims help confirm the exact period of manufacture.

What is the difference between sterling silver and solid silver?

Sterling silver refers to a specific alloy containing a fixed proportion of pure silver combined with other metals for durability. Solid silver is a general term indicating the item is made entirely of silver rather than being plated. Most British pieces from this selection carry sterling hallmarks confirming their composition.

How should I clean an antique silver trinket box?

Maintenance requires a soft cloth and minimal cleaning to preserve the original patina and any delicate gilt interiors. Aggressive polishing can wear down fine engraved details and repoussé relief. Pieces with enamel, tortoiseshell, or mother-of-pearl panels need careful handling to avoid moisture damage to the adhesives and inlays.
