What is an antique silver stamp case?

An antique silver stamp case is a small container made to hold postage stamps, popular when adhesive stamps became common in the nineteenth century. These pieces were kept on a desk or carried in a pocket or handbag to keep stamps from curling or sticking together.

How were silver stamp boxes used?

Users placed their postage stamps inside the compartments, often separating different values into multiple troughs within the same box. Some designs included a moistening roller or sat inside larger desk sets alongside blotters and sealing wax.

How do I date a silver stamp case?

Dating relies heavily on the hallmarks stamped into the silver, which reveal the assay office and the specific year letter for the manufacture. Stylistic clues such as Arts and Crafts hammered surfaces or Edwardian novelty shapes also help narrow down the period.
